Abstract

This study focuses on investigating how the promotion of business generation and entrepreneurship in the tourism sector can
strengthen and empower indigenous peoples in Oaxaca, contributing to the socioeconomic and cultural development of these
communities. The theme of the challenges in professionalization and strategic planning for the consolidation of indigenous
and community enterprises is studied, while preserving their culture. A qualitative approach was used through 10 in-depth
interviews, which allowed understanding the experiences, motivations, perceptions, perspectives, and challenges faced by
indigenous entrepreneurs involved in community tourism. Three interviews were conducted with consultants experienced in
this type of entrepreneurship, as well as with 2 Oaxacan institutes supporting indigenous community entrepreneurs. This study
helps identify development opportunities for indigenous communities in the tourism sector, preserving and promoting their
culture internationally, achieving economic development in favor of community strengthening and empowerment. The research
can serve as a guide for generating policies or development programs in support of strengthening indigenous community
businesses.
